North Woodside Weather Station

Thanks to Bill and Shanna on 3rd Ave, North Woodside now has a weather station which tracks temperature, wind, rainfall, pressure, humidity and more! It reports the data to a website anyone can access. Want to know exactly how much rain a recent thunderstorm unleashed? What the highest or lowest temperature of the day was? How strong the wind outside is? Check it out!

North Woodside Chalk Art Festival

I walk through North Woodside pretty much every day with my dog Charlie and one of the great joys I get is admiring the local hieroglyphics we find on our walks etched on our sidewalks in chalk.

Sometimes they are rainbows.  Other times airplanes and dinosaurs.  And yet others, they are shiny happy stick people.   But the art is always wonderful and joyous!

I’d like to encourage a celebration of local creativity in the neighborhood as we kick off the first official week of summer and challenge folks young and old to break out the chalk and draw on the sidewalk the week of June 20.   It can be silly or monumental.  The artists can be adults or kids (or adult children).   What is important is to share some color and art with other folks in the neighborhood!

Then I’d like folks to take pictures of their chalk and share them – we can post to the NWCA Facebook site or Listserv.

Who’s in?   Let’s get ready to draw!

Poll: Childcare During Annual Meeting

In a neighborhood survey conducted a few years ago, one of the reasons some neighbors cited for not having attended a NWCA Annual Meeting was lack of childcare.  In the interest of making the meeting more family friendly, the board is looking into several possible childcare options for the upcoming Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 25.

Before we proceed further, it would be helpful to get a sense of how many families would appreciate childcare being offered, the ages of their children, and if there is any preference between the various childcare options we are considering. Towards that end, we invite all parents of younger children (12 and under) to respond to a short poll by this Wednesday, May 11.

Based on the responses we will determine whether or not there is an interest in our providing childcare, and if so, which option/s makes most sense, based on the number and ages of the children, families’ preferences, relative cost, etc

Related, if there are any teens in the neighborhood who babysit and would be interested in assisting with childcare during the annual meeting, please contact the NWCA Communications Coordinator.

Videos: Meet a Few of Our Fox Neighbors

North Woodside is home to many species. Check out our adorable fox kit neighbors on Hanover St.! Can you count how many there are?

The video above was filmed the last week in April 2022. A month earlier a wildlife camera caught a fox sniffing and then “capturing” a small gingerbread house that had been placed in another backyard on Hanover St.

Hmmm, a gingerbread-loving fox, seven little foxes…this could become fodder for modern-day fairytale!

Memorial Bench Ceremony Invitation

Please join the NWCA’s Community Design Committee and the NWCA Board for the dedication of the first North Woodside Memorial Bench on Sunday, May 1st, at 11am. The new bench honors longtime community volunteer, Woody Brosnan, and will be located at the “pocket park” at the intersection of Lanier Drive and 3rd Avenue.

The short ceremony will include a ribbon cutting by Mr. Brosnan’s wife, current North Woodside resident and NWCA Secretary Amy Henchey, plus memories of Mr. Brosnan’s dedication to local service by neighbor Gus Bauman.

Donations of light refreshments for the event, such as cookies and drinks, would be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to contribute to the cost of the bench you may make a donation to the NWCA’s new Neighborhood Beautification and Memorial Fund. To donate by check or PayPal, follow the directions on our NWCA Dues page.

NWCA Annual Meeting 2022

Join us in person for the NWCA Annual Meeting!

The North Woodside Citizens Association annual meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 25th, 2022, at Grace Episcopal Church from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. The church is located at 1607 Grace Church Road, just across Georgia Avenue from North Woodside. We are excited to hold this year’s meeting in person again and to provide dinner and a chance to get together with neighbors.

Pizza and beverages will be served starting at 6:30 pm, and the meeting will begin at 7:00 pm. If you plan to join us for dinner, please RSVP here by May 23rd, so we know how much pizza to order.

In addition to neighborhood updates and voting, the meeting will include a forum with the candidates running for our new County Council District 4: Al Carr, Amy Ginsburg, Troy Murtha, Kate Stewart, and John Zittrauer. Bring your questions for the candidates!

All North Woodside residents are encouraged to attend, however only NWCA member households will be allowed to vote on neighborhood issues and the slate of officers for the upcoming year. Residents can pay membership dues at the meeting by check or online.

UPDATE: *Free* childcare will be offered in a separate room during the meeting, to enable more families with younger children to attend.

Community Yard Sale: Vote for Dates!

It is time to pick a date for our annual neighborhood yard sale!

A sign from the 2021 Community Yard Sale which took place during of the Brood X cicada emergence.

While some people choose to have sales on their own, we see significant increases in sale traffic when we come together as a community to draw people to our sales. Most people sell Saturday from about 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., with a number of families also selling on Sunday, only selling on Sunday, or extending their hours either day. Please only vote on weekends if you are planning to or likely to be a seller.  One vote per household!

Note, June 19 is Father’s Day and May 28-30 is Memorial Day weekend. This poll will close Saturday, April 16th and the selected dates will be announced soon after.

New Neighborhood Street Trees

A new street tree on Lanier Dr

Casey Trees was in the neighborhood last month, planting our latest batch of street trees in cooperation with the county, courtesy of a Chesapeake Bay Foundation grant.

You’ll see new trees on 2nd, 3rd, Elkhart, Luzerne, Lanier, Louis, Glen Ross, Glenridge, Hanover, Rookwood, and Stratton. Some less-common species we are getting this year include a black willow on Hanover St and a bald cypress on Glen Ross near the 5-way intersection.

The Tree Committee is starting to collect names for the next round of plantings to go in this fall or next spring. If you want a new street tree or trees and think you have the space, contact the Tree Committee.

Special thanks to Casey Trees and county arborist Jack Pond. Jack inspects, chooses species, and coordinates with Casey Trees. Casey Trees applied for the grant and does the planting.

Spring Egg Hunt

Dear Neighbors,

Please join us for a Spring Egg Hunt for North Woodside neighbors on Saturday, April 16th, starting at 10 am at Yeshiva field. The egg hunt itself is only 10 minutes, so don’t be late! We will also have crafts for the kids and the Easter bunny will make an appearance. To donate (plastic eggs, candy, crafts, baskets, decor) or to volunteer (hide eggs and set up craft) contact Luisa at the email address below.

Please RSVP with the number of children attending via this link or the QR code on the flyer below.

This community event is open to all, whether your family celebrates Easter or not. Please help us spread the word, especially to those neighbors who might not be plugged into the listserv.

We hope to see you there!
