Community Yard Sale: Vote for Dates!

It is time to pick a date for our annual neighborhood yard sale!

A sign from the 2021 Community Yard Sale which took place during of the Brood X cicada emergence.

While some people choose to have sales on their own, we see significant increases in sale traffic when we come together as a community to draw people to our sales. Most people sell Saturday from about 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., with a number of families also selling on Sunday, only selling on Sunday, or extending their hours either day. Please only vote on weekends if you are planning to or likely to be a seller.  One vote per household!

Note, June 19 is Father’s Day and May 28-30 is Memorial Day weekend. This poll will close Saturday, April 16th and the selected dates will be announced soon after.

Spring Egg Hunt

Dear Neighbors,

Please join us for a Spring Egg Hunt for North Woodside neighbors on Saturday, April 16th, starting at 10 am at Yeshiva field. The egg hunt itself is only 10 minutes, so don’t be late! We will also have crafts for the kids and the Easter bunny will make an appearance. To donate (plastic eggs, candy, crafts, baskets, decor) or to volunteer (hide eggs and set up craft) contact Luisa at the email address below.

Please RSVP with the number of children attending via this link or the QR code on the flyer below.

This community event is open to all, whether your family celebrates Easter or not. Please help us spread the word, especially to those neighbors who might not be plugged into the listserv.

We hope to see you there!

Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt: Hearts!

❤ 💌 💟 😻💓

We’re almost two years into the pandemic, the peak of the omicron wave just went through, the parameters for safe socializing tiringly keep changing, the national and international news remains depressing, it’s cold again but there’s no snow,…and well, it feels like time for another neighborhood scavenger hunt, a heart-themed one!

Want to contribute?  Display one or more hearts on your front door, windows and/or yard.  Can be big or small, any color, drawn, painted, or whatever you happen to have around that’s heart-shaped or has hearts on it (pillow? flag? sign? stuffed animal holding heart? etc).  Check out this link for lots of heart-themed coloring pages, if you want to go the print-out-and-color-and-tape-on-door route.

Hearts are already starting to pop up around the neighborhood. Here are a few of them. Can you find them?

All neighbors are invited to add to these! In the heart of this winter, let’s show some love to neighbors, postal carriers, package deliverers and all those who pass through the neighborhood, and add some little bursts joy and color to these gray days.

Neighborhood Forum on County Housing Issues

By Genevieve McDowell Owen, President

Have you ever wondered “so what, exactly, is a ‘zoning text amendment’ and how might it affect me?” Or maybe you saw some posts on the neighborhood listserv about Thrive Montgomery 2050 and would like a better understanding of what it means for our community. These and other questions will be answered at a Zoom forum on February 6 at 7 pm. The NWCA Board invites all neighbors to join us for this informative 90-minute virtual neighborhood meeting.

The meeting will start with a brief, factual presentation on current county housing issues and initiatives, tailored to address specific questions submitted by you and your neighbors,* by Montgomery County Planning Board Project Manager Khalid Afzal. Then the meeting will move on to a balanced panel discussion featuring knowledgeable local folks with different perspective on the issue who will answer more neighborhood questions. Scheduled to participate are local real estate expert Liz Brent, founder of Go Brent Realty; President of the Montgomery County Civic Federation Alan Bowser; the Maryland Advocacy Manager for the Coalition for Smarter Growth Jane Lyons; and longtime North Woodside resident Gus Bauman.

The link to the meeting will be posted on the listserv. Any neighborhood residents who wish to attend but don’t have access to the listserv, please contact the board’s President or Programs Coordinator.

North Woodside’s Garden of Lights

May not be Brookside Gardens,  but the North Woodside Garden of Lights was beautiful last night. And no tickets needed. Here is a gallery of a few illuminated-snow favorites. Photos by Lilian Pintea. Light artistry–enhanced by Mother Nature–by various neighbors on various streets.

Holiday Tree Lighting

Join us for holiday cheer, caroling, hot apple cider, and a visit with Santa at our annual North Woodside Community Tree Lighting (corner of Glen Ross Rd. and Luzerne Ave.) on Sunday, December 12th at 4:45 pm.

In the spirit of giving, we will have a bin available for donations of non-perishable food items for the Capital Area Food Bank. If you prefer to make a cash donation to the food bank, please click here.

We will also be collecting cash donations to support the Community Tree Lighting.

Hope to see you there!

Neighborhood Food Drive for Capital Area Food Bank

Please help support Capital Area Food Bank by making a donation through our neighborhood virtual food drive page. Last year, we set and reached the goal of $2021, so this year we’re aiming for $2022.  Can you help us reach this amount? Thank you for any contribution, small or large, that you can make!

Note: there will also be a bin for donations of nonperishable food items at the Community Tree Lighting, which will take place at 4:45pm Sunday, December 12, 2021 (triangle at intersection of Luzerne Ave and Glen Ross Rd)
